The subject of this year's gala is the rescue of Roy Hallums. Roy was a Navy veteran who was working as a logistics contractor in Iraq in 2004 when he was forcibly abducted with another man from his workplace by armed insurgents. They smuggled him away from Baghdad and hid him under the floor of a spartan shack approximately 65 miles west of Baghdad in the desert for almost a year (311 days). He was held in an incredibly cramped and dark space by his captors who had demanded a ransom for him. U.S. government officials began to presume that Roy was dead. However, he was ultimately located and rescued by the extraordinary efforts of some great Americans.
